Intracapsular tonsillectomyNew techniques of tonsillectomy are always emerging. In the last ten years, a technique called intracapsular tonsillectomy has become popular. This involves removing the tonsil from inside the capsule, but leaving the capsule intact. It was here the to thought, that if this technique were used, the chance of recurrent infections, because not all tonsil tissue is removed, is not totally eliminated.

Recent ten year studies have shown that using an intracapsular tonsillectomy as opposed to a classical extra capsule approach tonsillectomy reduces perioperative bleeding, reduces pain, facilitates earlier return to work. Some tonsil tissue is left behind, but the prevalence of recurrent tonsil infections is not significant.
