Tonsillectomy is an operation performed to remove the tonsils. It is most commonly done either for upper airway obstruction associated with obstructive sleep apnoea in children and adults or for recurrent infection.
The operation is done under general anaesthesia. It takes one hour of operating time. This involves a one night stay in hospital.
The tonsils can be removed using a variety of techniques including a scalpel, scissors, diathermy, laser, radio frequency or powered instrumentation.
A/Professor Havas has performed over 10,000 tonsillectomies and has introduced several of the newer techniques including micro dissection of the tonsils.
